Claw Game, Players Choice or whatever you want to call it. The Claw game has a claw and some prizes. What you didn’t know is that it cheats! Here’s how to beat it!

It’s pretty much 100% dependant on claw strength and picking the right prize. I used to play on one that you could control the descent on the claw and it had a strong grab, we used to win probably 60 to 75% of the time on that thing unless the toys were so hard packed you couldn’t grab anything.
The video states that the claw grab strength varies per machine and per attempt.
A friend use to work on stocking those machines. The claw strength, along with how tightly the toys are packed makes all the difference.
Ironically, increasing the strength and and loosly packing the toys will greatly increase profits as people play the machine because they know they can win. That entire thing of toys costs the $.50 it takes to play.
There is a secret joystick combination you can enter on certain brand of machines to give the strongest claw grab, but that is a well kept secret I am not going to share.
Wow, ummmm thanks for…sharing? Mike.

If the video is right about the machine being set to frequency of payout, then the manufacturer has a big problem. Most states and the U.S. government define gambling as (1) giving of consideration, (2) chance, and (3) a prize. Machines like this and carnival games are not gambling devices (illegal under the laws of most states and under federal law (for the transportation across state or national boundaries) because they are games of skill–the chance element is eliminated. However, if the manufacturers have reintroduced chance, then these are gambling devices.
We have one of these machines where I work. I can adjust the settings for claw grip and ‘win’ frequency remotely. I put a dab of manseed on the pretty furry toys and when a nice lady uses the machine, I quickly change the settings so she wins. I get excited when she hugs her new gooey toy.

Believe it or not, not all claw machines are “rigged” like the one above.
Also it might be worth noting that the show this clip is from “brainiacs” is not nearly as rigorous as mythbusters and from what I’ve seen from the show, is more for entertainment than any scientific fact.
can u tell me how do i shot web cuz i dunno how 2 do it and i u know and i wud rly aprciat it ploz if u culd PLEEEEEEEEEZ
good fun!!!!!!
i dunno, lol
If the toy is worth less than the amount you use to play then I guess it wouldn’t be gambling. I assume gambling means you win more than you bet.
“Hal Turner”, what the heck are you asking btw! lol
up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, select, start… woot, 80 lives.
Raide, you are my kind of Old School person!
Geiger,
Why would you assume gambling means you win more than you bet?
I’m still gambling if I bet ten bucks and win 1 buck back.
Also, you were apparently too busy pimping your blog on Digg and Technorati to bother providing a source for the video. As another commenter posted, quoting Brainiac isn’t exactly quality blogging.
Daniel
Daniel, gambling means that you “Can” win more than you bet. If you bet the 50 cents and you can only win 25 cents worth of stuff, then it’s not gambling. You are paying for a service. Compare that to carnivals, nobody is shutting down the “Guess your Weight” booth.
Gambling means you have the chance to win more than you gambled, this isn’t the case in the claw game.
Please keep posting comments though! I like them.
Come on, it takes 5 seconds to go look up a word before you post a comment.
‘Gambling’ does not mean that you “can” win more than you bet. Look it up on dictionary.com. I think the two best definitions are:
1. to play at any game of chance for money or other stakes.
6. any matter or thing involving risk or hazardous uncertainty.
Though none of the 7 definitions requires that the potential winnings be more than the bet.
1. If you wager 50 cents with a possible pay out of 25 cents, it’s not a gamble, it’s a guarantee.
6. …as stated in 1, the payout is less than the wager.
In the claw game, you are paying to play regardless of whether or not you win.
I worked in an arcade about 12 years ago in the US, and we had one of these claw machines. There was no ‘payout’ adjustment in the machine, but you could adjust claw strength with a screwdriver. When we wanted to minimize wins we would just pack the stuffed animals tighter so they were harder to pick up.
CoNTRA !!!!!
“1. If you wager 50 cents with a possible pay out of 25 cents, it’s not a gamble, it’s a guarantee.”
But you just contradicted yourself. You said a “possible” pay out of 25 cents. If it’s a POSSIBLE payout then it obviously isn’t a guarantee.
You’re also not realizing that the monetary value of the toy has nothing to do with the legal definition of gambling. Your personal definition of gambling means nothing, the legal definition is the one that matters. So actually look up the legal statues in the city/county/state/country you’re in and see for yourself what gambling is defined as.
However, since you’re so stuck on value, the actual value is far higher because everyone knows it’s very hard to actually win anything from those machines. Thus the value is not only the monetary worth of the item, but also the pride in knowing you were good enough to get it from one of those machines. Not to mention the added value the item receives when you give it to your girlfriend who is standing right next to you as you show off your amazing skills.
Shadar, I like most of what you said. However when I spoke of “a guarantee” I spoke of “a guarantee to lose money”. It is not unlawful to gamble for pride, high fives or bragging rights. It is illegal to gamble for money. Good note on the “legal definition of gambling”. Technically speaking every action or choice anybody could take can be considered a gamble.
I really don’t know how we could get carried away and start discussing gambling when playing a claw game. I simply wanted to point out that with some (or maybe most) claw games, you may not guarantee a strong enough claw strength to win. I still personally find that information worthwhile and that is the reason I posted it.
It’s embarrassing to admit just how much money I’ve dropped on these machines because my 5 year old son wanted a prize.
I’ve won a few times, but the vast majority of times, I’ve lost. It’s good to know that is not because I suck at being able to position the claw, but because the machine is much more like a slot machine than a game of skill.
Excellent post!
Hamster!
Hi Mom
I too worked in a bar that had one of these. After 2 weeks of constant winners they came in and made adjustments to the machine and made it real hard to win. At one point I was hitting 3 out of 4 tries and gave a pretty little stuffed animal to all the females I worked with. Then they had to go and ruin all my fun.
I beat the claw the old fashioned way. I looked at the prizes, realized they were worthless and walked away. Victory without confrontation is the sweetest of all.
there use 2 b 1 outside our local store until we ran a script and haxed it 2 get as much of the toys we wanted….i think the script was called “rock” or “brick”
There is a posting on these machines (like the machine you can buy from Sam’s Club) that say that the claw ension is set from the factory and cannot be adjusted. I wonder if that’s bullshit or not.
Xeyne, you are a superb hacker. I like your style!
I think all of the chets well beat the cheter if that does not do… well wher is my axe
lol

omigawsh! i’m definately doing this next time i go to the mall!!!!!! Thanx YouTube I
I usually win at these games, been that way since I was a kid. My dad is also quite good at winning the prizes in these games. Just I played a GIANT claw game. I won THREE of the giant prizes at the same time. A giant Bart, and Marge Simpson doll and Krusty the clown all in one grab. So do you call it dumb luck, skill or fate. That certainly can’t be something that is programed to cheat me out of money, i walked away with probably $80 of prizes these types of dolls retail for about $24) for $2.00 ( the price of one play) i really do not think it was rigged, if so then that arcade needs to reevaluate their game
happy gaming
Shanette
My husaband and I own a claw machine business. I can tell you for sure that there are ways that a vendor can make it more difficult for people to win. You can adjust the claw strength on them and you can also pack then in good and tight, but that is not very wise.If If people don’t win, they don’t play. This is the deal, if you want to win, only play right after the machine has been filled. We make no money off of the toys on the top, they are too easy to win (as long as the person filling the machine doesn’t pack then in!).And the key is to drag the animals to thehole. We pay about $2 to $2.50 for our animals, so they aren’t cheap, But we make great money and people are able to win.

Okay,
I’m a 13 year old kid and the thing that it tells you to count how many people win and loose is not true! I went to CN SKATE PALACE on a field trip and ended up coming home with 12 stuffed animals! Same thing happened at a local pizza store! So if you really believe this crap you have serious mental issues and you need help.

I am a father of one and I think its a rip! I try and spend a butt load of money trying to help my daughter win a prize she will smile about. It’s not the game thats bad but its the target that is. Just some little kids who want a toy to go home with… not such a crime and the toys are pennies to stock why not let a little kid be happy? they will still make a lot of money! I’m just saying make it a little easier on them.

I work at a casino in Reno NV and we got at least a dozen of these things. truth is when im bored out of my skull on slow days i watch people play these things. We got 2 specific ones that cost 2.50 a play and i am constantly asked as a person who gives out change to break 20s so people can put 5 dollars in at a time to play. its a huge claw and gotta say that it is totally rigged as some people win most people don’t though as the claw won’t grip the toy properly most of the time and even when it does it is the kind that has a long way to travel to the hole to drop so it usually will drop it. In the great state of Nevada Gambling is legal as well as a lot of other stuff so its not unheard of to rig any sort of game to make a profit off someone’s misfortune

With unexpectedforce. By many different hilary duff nude people and down, his leggings, she was.
They pack the toys them specially. So you cant win them and half the time the claws wider then the toys.
Hi just thought we would explain something.. That is twice now i’ve landed on your blog in the last 3 weeks looking for totally unrelated things. Spooky or what?
cherry blossom bag,
I know it’s been quite a while since the OP but bear with me.. Basically it’s not gambling because there are pre-determined amounts of winnings. You may not know what the pre-determined number of winners the machine is programmed to. It is the same thing that’s going on with them “Cafe” in Florida that have popped everywhere that sells you a “phone card” that has “free” points on the back.. So people are buying the real phone card for the “minutes” but just to get the code off the back which is credits to play on the game…They said since they are selling phone cards and NOT game credits that its legal (as of now) but the State did an investigation into it and found that over 95% of the “phone cards” were never ever used but the credits on the back were redeemed.. So basically they are selling phone cards to the customer and they are not even using the phone card they are just getting them to take the credits off of. My point being that since there is a pre-determined amount of winners than it doesn’t costitute as gambling because the people playing know before hand that they may not win.. So basically if they had the game set up to change the sequence every so often or something then that would be gambling because the amount and frequency constantly changes and if it is set for example to 1/10 then it will be EVERY 1/10 so even though someone has to watch someone to figure out the number the next sequence will be the SAME 1/10 and doesn’t change between each play if it changed and wasn’t 1/10 on the following sequences then you would be gambling your money away but since its pre-determined by the owner of the claw machine and every play through the day has the same sequence then it’s not a gamble.. Your probably saying “well lottery tickets are pre-determined.. Yes they are but if you see the tickets say ie. 1/5 wins , but it could go out of sequence and take take more than 5 turns to win.. So basically with the lottery averages there not right on, meaning if it says 1/5 it does NOT mean EVERY 1-out-of-5′ ,that’s just the average and the winners are stuck in in between so it could take you 20 turns to win that 1/5 I have had it happen… But with the claw machine as soon as you figure out the sequential order of numbers you will know EVERYTIME when the win is and that’s impossible to do with gambling, which is constantly out of sequence therefore changing your ability to win with it making it a gamble. But if the sequence and payout in this case a toy stay the same then it’s not considered gambling because if you watch and listen to the machine it will tell you the sequence UNLIKE any form of gambling like slots and so fourth… LMK if this makes since sorry I tried to explain the best I could ( lottery 1/5 is an average win it may take you more than 5 to get your 1/5 but with the claw you know after the second win the sequence therefore pre-determined and therefore legal….
Looks like only one other person realized the voice is Richard (Hamster) Hammond from TopGear Haha
The thing that doesn’t make sense to me about this video is…. How often do people play these games? In the video the payout was once in 10 attempts. That means the ‘observe’ had to stand around until the machine was played 11-20 times. I doubt these machines are even played that many times in the average day, unless somebody REALLY wants to win. It just doesn’t make sense to me to hang out around the machine that long just to increase your odds of winning a crappy little stuffed toy.
Well, I have a church mate who works at an amusement park.. He said that the machine is rigged..
